Dominik Szoboszlai has indicated that he sees his long-term future at Liverpool, but conceded that contract negotiations behind closed doors have stalled. Representatives from Szoboszlai’s EM Sports agency have been in dialogue with the Anfield hierarchy regarding a fresh deal in recent months, with the Hungary captain currently tied to the club until 2028.
Liverpool are eager to secure their No.8 on extended terms, given the considerable strides he has made on Merseyside during his near three-year stint, but speaking following Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Everton, Szoboszlai acknowledged that an agreement remains some distance away.
“As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progression,” Szoboszlai said. “So I cannot say anything new about my contract situation. We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that.
“As you guys maybe know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see.
“Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more.
“I love being here, as I’ve said many times. I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. Let’s see.
“I’m completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to rest – a big one, after my international break. Then we will see.
“The fans’ support, it means a lot. Every time they chant my name, it means a lot. I think we made it clear what happened against Manchester City at the Etihad.”

Szoboszlai provided the assist for match-winner Virgil van Dijk at Hill Dickinson Stadium as Liverpool claimed victory in the first-ever Merseyside derby at Everton’s new ground with a 100th-minute goal.
Van Dijk’s header, from Szoboszlai’s corner, arrived after Mohamed Salah’s opener had been cancelled out by Beto. The Reds’ midfielder was thrilled with a first double over the Blues since 2022.

He added: “It felt amazing. We had quite a few corners and chances, like they did. But to win a derby like this in the last second, we couldn’t ask for more.
“We were happy for each other to get the three points but also for the fans, because we know what it means for them, and also it means a lot for us to win a derby.
“It was a long time (since last away derby win, in 2021). Also last season away, we couldn’t manage to win, but this season we could.
“I’d rather win it like this than 3-0 or something, you know!
“This is more enjoyable to watch I think for the fans for both sides, actually. At the end, maybe they were the unlucky ones, but we are happy to take the three points.”
The win leaves Liverpool in fifth and seven points clear of Chelsea in the race for the final Champions League place, with the two sides due to face each other at Anfield next month.
Szoboszlai said: “A win always changes the mood but we have to stay on the floor and keep working hard every day.
“We have to keep fighting for the Champions League spots and it is going to be hard games ahead of us.
“It is always hard when you play against the teams that are close to you – Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace. You have to always be ready and to fight for them.
“I think what (Arne Slot) said (about Liverpool having a bright future) is right. We brought in new players – young, talented players.
“We know what they can do and that they can help the team – that is why they are here. I’m really looking forward to playing with them for the next five games, for sure, and hopefully in the future as well.”
